PRESERVE LEXINGTON Meeting to Discuss the Recently Announced LFUCG Inventory of Historic Downtown Properties

.hmmessage P { margin:0px; padding:0px } body.hmmessage { font-size: 10pt; font-family:Verdana } WHEN:   Wednesday, May 20 at 7:30pm

WHERE: Downtown Public Library, Conference Room A (in the basement)

WHY:  Most of you will have heard that the Mayor has asked the LFUCG Division of Historic Preservation to prepare an Inventory of Downtown Historic Buildings. Many of you attended the first public meeting earlier this week, where a draft of the Inventory was unveiled. A number of important questions were raised by the public about the process for creating this inventory and the ultimate purpose of the inventory. Below are just a few of those questions:

Since a similar inventory was prepared in 1994, what is the purpose of this new inventory?

The 1994 inventory, which identified most of the buildings in the Dame block as significant, had no effect in preventing the demolition of every building on this block. Will this survey be any more effective in preventing future demolitions of architecturally significant buildings?

While the National Register of Historic Places identifies buildings as either significant or not, this inventory identifies buildings as "non-contributing", "contributing", "significant" and "outstanding". Will buildings that are identified as "contributing" be afforded less protection than "significant" buildings? Will "outstanding" buildings be afforded greater protection than "significant" or "contributing" buildings?

Because the answers to these and other questions remain unclear, and because the preparation of this Inventory will allow room for public input, we hope you can join us for an hour or so to discuss this Inventory in greater depth and to decide how we can best participate in the public process.
